As one of the stress relievers and one option for profitable business opportunity in this pandemic crisis, the PSU-Asingan Campus conducted a training on bonsai production initiated by the hardworking Campus Executive Director and also a bonsai enthusiast, Dr. Valentin B. Calpo Jr., held at PSU-AC covered court, May 14.

“No matter how stressful you are if you are with your plants like your  bonsai plants, they can give a relax feeling and they have some psychological benefits which may help you to remove your mental stress”, Dr. Calpo said.

In order to choose better bonsai materials, wiring and positioning techniques for propagation, Mr. Al Palad, President of Bonsai and Suiseki Club of Pangasinan (BASCOP) and Mr.  Emerito Austria, BASCOP Vice President, taught the participants with some styling techniques like leaf trimming, pruning, wiring, clamping and grafting by demonstrating the process using sample plants for bonsai.

Likewise, to demonstrate how to wire bonsai branches properly, Miss Nonie Ramos of BASCOP discussed strategies on branch selection and proper wiring while Mr. Jose Excel Antonio, Board of Director of BASCOP taught and demonstrated how to graft, wire and keep bougainvillea blooming.

The trainers taught the participants on how to maintain proper cultivation and care of their bonsai trees with different techniques and tools to support their growth and long-term maintenance that increase their aesthetic appeal.
